SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS IN CONSTRUCTION ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER

As we move into the 2020s with global warming at the forefront of many people’s minds, using sustainable building materials in construction has become an approach that is not just desired or a fringe concept but has become essential if we are to maintain the planet’s status quo and give our grandchildren a future.

The following are statistics taken from www.greenspec.co.uk

Construction materials account for:
• 420 million tonnes of material consumption (7 tonnes per person)
• 20% of the UK’s total ecological footprint
• 19% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions
• 30% of all UK road freight

Many of these statistics are quite surprising and even alarming to most people. The environmental impact the industry is having is substantial.

Though we will no longer be part of the European Union there is ‘The Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/’ EC aims to have 70% of Construction and Demolition waste recycled by 2020. This directive is part of the EU Construction and Demolition Waste Protocol and Guidelines published on 18th September 2018. It is still to be discovered whether this has been achieved but under current conditions, it is highly unlikely.

So we have to look at what is a reclaimed building material and what is a recycled material.

RECLAIMED BUILDING MATERIALS

Any materials that have been used before either in buildings, temporary works or other uses and are re-used as construction materials without reprocessing. Reclaimed materials may be adapted and cut to size, cleaned up and refinished but they fundamentally are being re-used in their original form.

RECYCLED BUILDING MATERIALS

Recycled materials are considered to be any materials that have been taken from the waste stream and reprocessed and re-manufactured to form part of a new product.

LUBELSKA

At Lubelska we pride ourselves in supplying reclaimed products to the sustainable construction and interiors industries. Whether it is Reclaimed Oak flooring, Reclaimed Terracotta Tiles or our Reclaimed Lubelska Brick Tiles, we probably have the right product for your floor. At the time of writing all our reclaimed products come from within the borders of Europe and therefore have a minimal ecological footprint.

We reclaim and prepare our products to order and though we offer some standard products, we are also able to offer a bespoke service and can usually meet an end user’s demands.

Our floors are suitable for any room in the house but are traditionally laid in working and living areas. They have also been used in orangeries and greenhouses, but also outside on paths and patio areas. Alongside our reclaimed floors, we supply a range of sealers and cleaners under the GoProtect banner that complement our floors perfectly.

Whatever your reclaimed flooring requirement, take a look at our website: www.lubelska.co.uk or give us a call on 020 3911 5526 if you have any questions.
